Now, today we are venturing deep into the wacky archives of 2010s anime. We’re talking about a show that, honestly, I don't even fully know what to say about it. If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix adorable cat-ear-wearing alien girls with high-stakes shootouts, secret government conspiracies, and a whole lot of fan service, well, congratulations, your very specific prayers have been answered. Today, we are talking about Cat Planet Cuties!
Alright, let’s break down the premise for anyone who hasn't taken the plunge into this absolute fever dream of a series. Our story follows Kio Kakazu. He’s a kindhearted, pretty sophisticated guy just trying to live his life, but honestly? His day-to-day existence on Okinawa is completely dull and boring. That is, until he attends a funeral for one of his ancestors. Life takes a sharp left turn when he meets Eris, a literal catgirl.
And things escalate fast. Soon enough, Kio wakes up to find Eris sleeping right next to him—and let’s just say she’s half-naked. Casual, right? She casually explains to him that she’s an alien who has traveled all the way to Earth just to study and learn more about its inhabitants. Super cute, right?
Well, not quite. Because unbeknownst to Kio and Eris, there are fanatical alien worshippers and mysterious, shadowy organizations hot on their trail to capture her. But wait, it gets better—or worse, depending on how you look at it. Kio quickly finds out that his own friends are secretly operatives working for these exact same organizations! So, what’s a normal, sophisticated guy to do? Well, it’s up to Kio to step up, protect Eris, and navigate this crazy sci-fi conspiracy.
Sounds like a wild action-comedy ride, right? And listen, I’ll give credit where credit is due. Depending on what kind of anime fan you are, Cat Planet Cuties actually hits a few very specific checkboxes.
If you like cat girls? Oh boy, this show has got you covered. They are everywhere. If you like high-octane shootouts and secret agent action? Yep, this show has that too. And, hey, if you like to be a little bit pervy and enjoy your classic fanservice tropes, this anime definitely has you covered on that front as well.
...But then we have to ask the ultimate question: Is the story actually good?
And look, I'm gonna be completely honest with you guys... not really. (Laughs) Not really at all!
If I had to describe the vibe of this show, I’d say it’s basically Ah! My Goddess, but with space cat girls—and minus pretty much all of the heartwarming charm that made Ah! My Goddess such a classic. You have this cozy, supernatural-roommate dynamic where an otherworldly beauty moves in with an ordinary guy, but instead of focusing on sweet character growth or genuine romance, it gets bogged down by this bizarre, disjointed conspiracy plot and an avalanche of gags.
It’s one of those shows where you sit back on your couch, watching the chaos unfold on screen, and you just find yourself staring blankly at the TV going, "What am I watching right now?" And yet... somehow, you keep watching anyway. Is it a masterpiece? Absolutely not. Is it a guilty pleasure trainwreck? Well, I'll let you guys be the judge of that.
